Essential oils in Daoist stone medicine
Each of the six stages has its stones, its point, its meditation — and its blend. The oils are not the decoration of the path. They are the fastest way in.
Why oils at all, if this is about stones? Because a stone works over weeks and a smell works over seconds. The olfactory nerve is the only sensory nerve that does not pass through the thalamus: what is smelled is in the limbic system before the mind can name it. A stone asks a question that takes time to answer. An oil asks the same question in a way that lets the body answer before the head does.
The sentence that changes everything
In the Chinese view an oil has a direction, not an effect.
Take lavender, the oil everybody knows to be calming. Lavender does not calm. It moves Liver Qi and clears heat. In someone who is hot and congested, that looks like calm. In someone who is cold and depleted, it takes the last of what they have. Same oil, same dose, opposite result.
That is why two people can sit in front of you who both say “restless” and need the opposite of each other: one is scattered outward and has to come down. The other is stuck fast and has to move. Same word, opposite direction.
The direction tells you whom an oil helps. The effect does not. That is the difference between a list and a method — and the reason one can use the same oils for years without ever doing the same thing twice.
How a blend is built
Three layers, each with a job.
| Note | What it is | How long it stays | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Citrus peel, resins, light leaves | 10–20 minutes | Up and out: wakes, clears, opens |
| Heart | Flowers, leaves, mid-weight resins | 2–4 hours | Into the rhythmic centre, where breath and heartbeat are |
| Base | Roots, woods, heavy resins | 6 hours to days | Downward: binds, slows, anchors |
Without a base note any opening tips over into flooding. That is the one sentence that returns in every hour of this path — and the most common confusion in aromatherapy altogether. A blend that only opens does not help a traumatised person. It overwhelms them, and precisely in the moment they have opened.
This is why each of the six stage blends carries a counterforce within it. What one note opens, the other holds down. Only the pair works; on its own neither does what it should.
Eight blends, six stages
Free Flow · Open the Window · Intention · Witnessing · Change · Home — one for each stage, in that order. Then Sealing for the time after the six stages, and the Harmonizer for those who do not know which one to take.
Each is built on the task of its stage: to release the freeze, to open the narrowed view, to hold an intention, to witness without intervening, to carry the change, to arrive. Which oils are in them and why exactly those — that belongs to the Path and the Training, not to a web page. Not out of secrecy: a recipe without the stage it belongs to is an ingredient list, and ingredient lists have done a great deal of harm.
The oil evening
Ninety minutes, eight blends, six to ten people. The shortest honest way to get to know this path — and an evening that also stands on its own.
A quarter of an hour on the three notes, with one single exercise that the nose understands faster than the head. Then the eight blends, four minutes each, in the order of the way. A break with coffee beans, because the nose has to be reset. At the end everyone names two blends: the strongest and the least pleasant. Both say the same thing.
We smell, we do not apply. No oil touches skin that evening — that is the dividing line between an evening and a treatment.
CHF 20. Anyone who begins the path within three months has the evening credited.
Please say beforehand: pregnancy or breastfeeding, epilepsy, asthma. We then leave out individual blends — it takes a minute to arrange and should keep nobody from coming. Children under twelve are not part of it.
The blends on their own
The stage blends belong to the path and are handed over there. On their own they are available to everyone who has walked the path, and after a conversation to others as well — but not as an answer to a complaint.
Whoever comes with a symptom gets an appointment, not a blend. That is not caution towards the customer but towards the oils: they work, and what works can also do harm in the wrong place.
